Thomas Tuck with C.R. Onsrud (Troutman, North Carolina) introduces the 5-axis 367 G-Series in this post. This specific machine will be used by Scout Boats (Somerville, South Carolina) to cut a wide range of materials and parts, improving their R&D to manufacturing process, to build some of the best boats in the world.
Although this machine will be used for boat manufacturing, the C.R. Onsrud 5-Axis G-Series is used across the globe to cut large-format parts for, not only the marine industry, but the aerospace, defense, and automotive industries as well. Whether your business needs to process composites, plastic, foam, aluminum, or a combination of different materials, this highly configurable machine is designed to meet just about any challenge you throw at it, overcoming those challenges, and helping you accomplish your manufacturing goals.

Some options and key features of the 5-Axis G-Series fixed table, moving gantry (bridge) machine include:
- Work Envelope
10′ x 30′
This particular machine is produced specifically for Scout Boats who specialize in center console sport fishing and baby boats. They needed a machine capable of handling both small and large composite foam components for their plugs, molds, and other various boat parts. To make sure they had what they needed with room to grow, we developed one of our largest G-Series machines.
5′ x 10′ to 12′ x 100′+
Let’s pretend your business needs a larger or smaller work envelope. That’s not a problem. That’s what is great about this G-Series machine in that it’s one of the most configurable machines in our CNC lineup.
- 53″ Z-Stroke (option), 29″ (standard). Other options available.
- Standard 15 hp spindle.
This spindle packs plenty of power and rpm for composite applications, the specific intentions of Scout Boats. Depending on your application, we offer a 12 hp spindle all the way up to 75 hp, or we can tailor a solution based on your needs.
For example, we previously built a 42 foot long dual gantry machine that was equipped with four 24 hp spindles on each gantry for a total of eight spindles. We’ve also manufactured a 5-Axis G-Series with dual gantries and a 5-Axis spindle on each gantry to machine aluminum extrusions.
- Air Knives:
When machining fibrous or dusty material, air knives blow air along the rack and pinion and guide rail during machining. This protects the machine from dust and debris and improves longevity of the components.
- Heavy-duty thick steel construction.
- Work holding methods, such as vacuum.
When utilizing vacuum as the work holding method, it is important to have the proper combination of pressure and cfm. This is necessary to secure the material in place during machining and eliminate the variable of the component moving. To minimize loss and improve the efficiency, this particular CNC build has seven vacuum zones to allow 100% of the vacuum to be focused in the area of machining. These vacuum zones are typically M-code controlled, allowing you the flexibility to turn them on or off at the beginning or end of a program, or you can operate them using our FANUC® touchscreen controller.
- 12-position rotary.
This particular machine build includes a dedicated station for longer, large diameter tools and aggregates. Many of our CNC machines can be equipped and tailored to meet your needs. Whether that’s the basic, standard option of 10-position or 12-position, all the way up to 100+.
- Automatic Tool Measuring Integrated System by Renishaw® provides quick and easy setup of tooling and helps prevent an operator from typing in the wrong tool size. It measures both tool length and diameter.
- Material placement: pop-up pins
To accurately place material on the machine in reference to the 0,0 point of a C.R. Onsrud machine, pop-up pins help align the material for accurate machining. When machining a lot of different components, these reduce your changeover, setup time, and properly tell the machine where that component is.
Example: A Renishaw® receiver utilized with the Renishaw probe system probes the faces of a component, alternate for the coordinate or the rotation of the component, and properly execute the program.
- FANUC® controls, servos and drives provide, without question, the most reliable solution in the market. FANUC advantages:
- The largest control manufactured in the world.
- Parts guaranteed for the life of the controller.
- Peace of mind when it comes to reliability and longevity. They measure their downtime in decades: 52 years mean time before failures.
- Every C.R. Onsrud FANUC control comes standard with the FANUC interface as well as our own user-friendly, touchscreen HMI, making it very simple for you to learn and operate. It provides a CNC operator with little experience or decades of knowledge the simplicity and functionality to save them time and save you money.
- Manufactured in America.
Designed, fabricated, machined, painted, assembled, and shipped from our factory in Troutman, NC.
- Tailored to your needs and built to last.
