Chuck Shive with Chips & Tips describes how to machine at an angle with a 3-Axis Router.
Many of you know where we’re going with this, and some of you are saying, “Well, that’s not possible,” but it is! All you need is an adjustable angle aggregate. This aggregate, like all aggregates, fits directly into your spindle, just like a normal HSK-63 tool holder does. Instead of the spindle directly turning the tool, however, it actually turns a gearbox. The gearbox then turns the angled tool at the desired angle. So, to achieve a 45° angle on a 3-Axis machine, all you need to do is adjust your aggregate to 45 degrees.
The advantages of using an aggregate, you can:
- Run complete parts on your machine without needing to reposition your part.
- Run complete parts on your machine without having to add a second or third setup operation.
- Run complete parts without the need for a 5-Axis machine. But hey, if you need one, we sell those as well.
- Reduce total part processing time which, depending on your application, can equate to saving hundreds of dollars per week.

There are lots of other types of aggregates, including saw aggregates, duo heads, belt sanders and more, that can significantly improve your shop’s offerings and reduce your cycle times.
